Polenz is a district with a rural charm in the town of Neustadt on the outskirts of the Saxon Switzerland region.
The valley of Neustadt lies on the border between the Lausitzer Mountains and the Elster Sandstone Mountains. As one approaches the place from west of Dresden or Stolpen, as a first they cross over the Karrenberg (in dialect spoken locally: Kornberg). Although now an unforested hill where sometimes crops are sown on its surface, it got its name not from corn but from wagons that merchants used to transport goods across this mountain in medieval times via old salt route. From here one can enjoy a lovely view over the town and surrounding areas which is well connected with hiking paths.
Southwest of there lies Polenz, an adjacent area bearing the same name as its stream. The river meanders through granite first then through sandstone before joining together with Sebnitzbach only to continue on a journey for some more kilometers until it finally flows into Elbe close by Bad Schandau.
The Neustädter Tal is famous because of the wild March pear moss patches in Polenztal, one of the largest natural occurrences of this species within Germany. (de.wikipedia.org).
