05.07.2012 Stereotypes in the USA and Germany
June 27, 2012 - our school got an important visitor. A representative from the US American consulate spoke with students of the 8th and 9th forms about stereotypes in the USA and in Germany. We concentrated on prejudices in both countries.
Kirsten Teschauer, our guest, is a real American. She was born in New Jersey and attended the University in Virginia. As many other American people she has German ancestors.
At first she told us something about the functions and the tasks of an embassy and its ambassador. She continued with information about the work of the people in a consulate.
Later she made us realize that we all have got prejudices. Some stereotypes for Germany are:
We eat Bratwurst and Sauerkraut every day and
that we are intolerant and very formal.
Prejudices we Germans mostly have got towards the US Americans are:
They love guns,
eat a lot of fast food every day and
drive big cars.
Kirsten Teschauer speaks German very well, but she always talked to us in English. So we had to listen carefully. For the one or other of us it was a bit difficult.
All in all this was a successful presentation, sometimes a bit funny and always interesting.
We want to say thank you very much to Kirsten Teschauer and we are looking forward to meeting you again.
